I typically searched news outlets for information on natural disasters occurring. I know some people consider major news outlets to be corrupt and to some degree they are but if you compare the data from a variety of sources, then you can get the correct information.
I started on major news sources like:
http://edition.cnn.com/
http://www.nytimes.com/
http://www.sciencedaily.com/
http://www.nbcnews.com/
From there I followed breaking news to smaller, more scientific sources. They just depended on what the major news source used as sources.
